IF THE 2024 EDITION of the Top100 Projects Report is any indication,
Canada managed to get more shovels in the ground year-over-year to build
important infrastructure projects—to the tune of $292 billion.
This year’s total value was an increase of nearly $20 billion compared
to 2023. With 15 projects making their debut, 12 projects which reached
substantial completion were replaced, as were two projects that fell outside
the top 100 projects. The North Shore Wastewater Treatment Plant was put
on hold and was therefore not eligible.
The 15 new projects totaled $20 billion, with six of them falling under
the buildings development sector, with the remaining projects falling under
the transportation (four), energy (two) water-wastewater (two) and transit
sectors (one).
Overall, the transit sector again leads the Top100 Projects Report with
more than a quarter (26) of the projects, valued at $122 billion, followed
by the buildings sector (31 projects, $51 billion), the energy sector (nine
projects, $48 billion), the transportation sector (19 projects, $40 billion),
and the water-wastewater, communications, and remediation sector (15
projects, $31 billion).
Healthcare facilities led the way with five hospital projects, totalling
nearly $9 billion, led the South Niagara Hospital ($3.6 billion) and the new
Surrey Hospital and B.C. Cancer Centre ($2.88 billion).
