EDITOR’S NOTE
BUILDING FOR THE FUTURE
by John Tenpenny
EVERY ELECTION has its touchstone moment, something that grabs hold of the electorate’s consciousness and becomes the issue that takes over the conversation, usually at the expense
of other equally important issues. In the 2025 federal election, that topic is Donald Trump’s
tari昀昀 war.
Who’s the right person to stand up to the U.S.’s bully tactics? How best to reduce interprovincial trade barriers to open the entire Canadian market? How to build more desperately needed housing?
These are all valid questions, but one issue and one industry deserve greater attention
during and after the election: How can we build new infrastructure to enable our economy
to reach new markets and grow?
Each of the three main parties vying to form the next government have weighed in on
the topic: The New Democratic Party of Canada has proposed “Canada Victory Bonds” to
fund public infrastructure, plus a national “Build Canadian” strategy; the Conservative
Party of Canada promised to create a “Canada First” National Energy Corridor to fasttrack approvals for key projects; and the Liberal Party of Canada pledged $5 billion for a
new Trade Diversi昀椀cation Corridor Fund to boost trade infrastructure.
The construction industry is at the heart of these political party platforms. Boasting
over 1.6 million workers and $151 billion in economic impact, it is the foundation of our
future. It cannot be forgotten once all the ballots have been counted.
During the election, Canada’s construction industry launched a national campaign calling for action on infrastructure investment and development.
The Construction for Canadians campaign was announced by the Canadian Construction
Association (CCA), and was supported by 57 national, provincial, and regional construction associations from coast to coast.
“A strong construction industry is the key to a strong Canada,” said CCA president Rodrigue Gilbert. “To support long-term growth, the next federal government must make the
necessary and overdue investments in trade-enabling infrastructure, workforce development, and modernized procurement.”
Construction a昀昀ects every Canadian. It shapes Canada’s physical landscape, grows our
economy, connects communities, and plays a critical role in building a prosperous and
resilient country. But underinvestment, workforce challenges, and outdated policies, combined with tari昀昀s, are barriers to the growth Canadians need. To set Canada up for success,
the next federal government must commit to supporting construction.
“The stakes are high—without strategic investment, Canada risks falling further
behind,” added Gilbert. “We need bold action to ensure our industry has the resources,
talent, and opportunities to keep building a strong economy and communities where Canadians can thrive.”
Each voter has an issue that in昀氀uences their decision at the polling station. From our
perspective, no matter the issue, somewhere in the background is construction. And we
can’t forget that, especially once the dust of one of the most important elections in our
country’s history has passed.
