SPRINGBANK RESERVOIR COMPLETED
IN TIME FOR FLOOD SEASON
GOVERNMENT OF ALBERTA
Construction of the $849.4-million Springbank
Off-Stream Reservoir began in 2022.
THE GOVERNMENT OF ALBERTA announced that the
Springbank O昀昀-Stream Reservoir (SR1) is now
in operation, protecting lives, and critical infrastructure in southern Alberta from 昀氀oods.
In response to the 2013 昀氀ood, the province
committed to building SR1 to strengthen
昀氀ood protection for Calgary and nearby
communities.
Construction of the $849.4-million SR1
began in 2022, following robust engagements
with the public and First Nations, and a
comprehensive regulatory process. Following
three years of construction, the SR1 is now
complete and can provide communities along
the Elbow River with a 昀氀oodwall of defense
against large-scale 昀氀oods.
“With 昀氀ood season now upon us, Calgary
and southern Alberta can rest assured that

they will be protected from future large-scale
昀氀oods like that of 2013. SR1’s innovative
design will ensure people, communities
and businesses are bu昀昀ered from the most
devastating physical and economic impacts of
major 昀氀oods,” said Devin Dreeshen, Minister
of Transportation and Economic Corridors.
SR1 is the 昀椀rst of its kind in Alberta, using
a coordinated approach to engage multiple
aspects of 昀氀ood mitigation infrastructure.
SR1 will work in tandem with the Glenmore
Reservoir and other 昀氀ood mitigation infrastructure in and around Calgary to manage
downstream water 昀氀ows and reduce the impacts of 昀氀oods by temporarily holding water
and reducing 昀氀ows in the Elbow River.
“With flood season now upon us, Calgary and southern
Alberta can rest assured that they will be protected from
future large-scale floods like that of 2013.”
