SURVIVING COLD WINTERS is a Canadian right of passage and a point of pride
we take with us wherever we go. But those chilly evenings also highlight
reliability issues we are experiencing with our energy grid, such as
Albertans who face the possibility of rolling blackouts in early January.
The future will demand more energy than is currently being produced
and our power grids will need to tap as many sources as possible.
Provincial governments and their utility partners seem to be listening.
In British Columbia, BC Hydro will embark on an unprecedented
level of construction over the next 10 years, with a $36-billion investment
for community and regional infrastructure projects to build out the
province’s electricity system.
Michael Sabia, Hydro-Québec’s chief executive has laid out a blueprint
that will see the utility spend as much as $185 billion to transform
Quebec’s energy landscape from now until 2035, including an estimated
$110 billion on new clean power generation facilities and $50 billion to
improve the reliability of the electrical grid.
Next door, Doug Ford’s government announced its support for Ontario
Power Generation’s plan to refurbish Pickering Nuclear Generating
Station’s “B” units. Not wanting to put all his eggs in one basket, Ford is
also planning to sign deals for 5,000 megawatts of renewable power over
the next 昀椀ve years—which could roughly double the province’s supply of
wind and solar power.
Alberta, a hub for solar and wind power, is also expanding its options,
with the recent announcement that Edmonton’s Capital Power and
Ontario Power Generation are partnering to develop the deployment of
grid-scale small modular reactors (SMRs) in the province.
Renewable energy may have the biggest role to play in boosting
capacity, and solar and wind, complemented by vast battery storage,
promise lower costs for consumers. The evidence certainly backs this
trend. According to the latest data from the Canadian Renewable Energy
Association (CanREA), Canada’s wind, solar and energy-storage sectors
grew by a steady 11.2 per cent in 2023. The industry added 2.3 GW of new
installed capacity last year, including more than 1.7 GW of new utilityscale wind, nearly 360 MW of new utility-scale solar, 86 MW of new
on-site solar, and 140 MW / 190 MWh of energy storage. Canada now
has a total installed capacity of more than 21.9 GW, including 20.4 GW of
utility-scale wind and solar energy, 1.2 GW of on-site solar and 356 MW /
539 MWh of energy storage nationwide.
Clean power—something Canada has in abundance—is the key to
ensuring the future of this country’s electricity grid.
