POMERLEAU IS LEADING
THE NET-ZERO TRANSITION
Canadian construction company, Pomerleau, is striving to accelerate the transition to a low-carbon
economy. To demonstrate its environment, social and governance (ESG) progress, Pomerleau released
its first Integrated Report this year. Fighting climate change is one of the company’s main priorities. The
company is targeting a 40% reduction in its Scope 1 and Scope 2 GHG emissions, using 2021 as the
reference year. Learn more about some of the initiatives Pomerleau has implemented to help the industry
transition to a net-zero world.
On-Site Heat Initiative
Life Cycle Analysis Service Offer
In collaboration with two external partners, Pomerleau developed an initiative to evaluate potential solutions that would
enable the company to reduce the GHG emissions generated
by its temporary heating equipment. Presently deployed as
a pilot project, one innovation in the form of a smart control
unit, provides better monitoring of the temperature in the work
environment for the comfort of Pomerleau’s teams, while reducing the fuel consumption, costs and GHG emissions.
Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) is an environmental assessment
methodology that considers each stage in the life cycle of
buildings and infrastructure. The innovation greatly facilitates
collaboration with partners by delivering a sustainable project
with a lower environmental impact. Pomerleau integrates
the LCA alongside two other initiatives to promote net-zero
solutions on-sites. The company responds to the requirements
of the LEED certification and integrates the BIM model on
projects to be analyzed so the company can choose project
components and opt for materials with a low-carbon footprint.
This reduces the environmental impact of Pomerleau’s projects
from the design phase, in particular the embodied carbon and
the emissions generate by construction activities.
Electric Vehicle Program
Pomerleau launched the electric vehicle program to encourage
employees to adopt more sustainable means of transportation
to decarbonize the company’s activities. Any employee who
would like to acquire an electric or hybrid vehicle for their
personal and professional use has access to a $2000 financial
incentive. Since the launch of the program in February, 38
employees have decided to drive electric, and many more are
considering the option.
Sustainable Construction Group
To facilitate the operationalization of its ESG strategy on its
sites and to consolidate its expertise in delivering sustainable
projects, the company brought on a new director and a team
of sustainable construction experts. The team’s mandate is
to respond to the rapid growth in the number of projects
seeking sustainable certification such as LEED and Passive
House, to deploy concreate decarbonization and circular
initiatives on sites, and to develop an expertise in sustainable
construction material and methods to support project teams
and professional from coast to coast. This group will enable
Pomerleau to consolidate its in-house knowledge and offer
expertise to its clients.

Partnership for Carbon Sequestration
Since 2021, Pomerleau has donated more than $50,000 to
Tree Canada to support the Grow Clean Air program, which
seeks to support best practices in forest management led
by costal First Nations communities living in the Great Bear
Rainforest, located on the north and central coasts of British
Columbia, and in Haida Gwaii. The First Nations’ ecosystembased forest management and practices prevent the release
of carbon that trees have already sequestered and continue to
store. This project enables communities to sell carbon credits
and generated revenue to create jobs in sustainable sectors
and protect their traditional territories.
