RÉSEAU EXPRESS MÉTROPOLITAIN
2023 Top100 Projects Rank: 10 Value: $6.9 billion
PHASE ONE OF MONTREAL’S new 67-kilometre
electric automated light rail system opened
after 昀椀ve years of construction and testing,
with the inauguration of the 昀椀rst branch of
the Réseau express métropolitain (REM),
connecting Brossard to Gare Centrale.
“Taking an idea and bringing it to fruition
is quite an accomplishment for the thousands of people who’ve worked tirelessly
for 昀椀ve years now on building this major
project for the greater metropolitan region.
I’d like to personally thank all these REM
artisans whose collective e昀昀ort is now giving
thousands of citizens access to a brand-new,
sustainable, frequent and e昀케cient mobility
service,” said Jean-Marc rbaud, president
and CEO, CDPQ Infra.
“Building the REM is much more than
construction or engineering; it represents an
opportunity to build the future. To this end,
we brought together more than 4,000 men
and women of 59 di昀昀erent nationalities. I’d
like to extend my warmest thanks to them
and their families, without whom none of
our e昀昀orts would have been possible,” said
Jaime Freyre, project manager, NouvLR
consortium.
BRUCE POWER
REFURBISHMENT
BRUCE POWER ANNOUNCED that Unit 6 has been renewed and has been connected to Ontario’s electricity grid following its successful Major Component
Replacement (MCR) outage.
It is the 昀椀rst unit to be returned to service as part of Bruce Power’s
Life-Extension Program, which will see Units 3-8 refurbished over the
next decade to power Ontario forward, extending the units’ operation
period to 2064 and beyond.
Unit 3 was removed from service for its MCR outage earlier this year
and is reaping the bene昀椀ts of lessons learned in Unit 6 to achieve time
and cost savings. Several innovations were realized in Unit 6 that will be
carried forward to improve performance and quality in subsequent MCR
outages, including tooling and inspection automation and robotics, and
advanced modelling and training.
Each MCR Project extends the reactor’s life for 40 years by replacing
and upgrading key equipment. Hundreds of companies and thousands
of tradespeople replaced 480 fuel channels, 960 feeders and eight massive
steam generators, in addition to thousands of other modi昀椀cations and
tasks, including loading 5,760 new fuel bundles into the core.
