The Bowmanville Extension will extend the Lakeshore East GO
Line nearly 20 kilometres to Bowmanville. With nearly 17,000 daily
trips expected by 2041, the extension will connect more of Durham
Region to fast two-way, all-day rail service.
The Bowmanville Extension project includes: new track and
signal infrastructure; seven new bridges, including a new rail alignment over Highway 401; bridge reconstruction and existing bridge
modifications; utility relocations; and at-grade crossing upgrades.
In 2024, GO Transit announced that works would begin on the
future Ritson Road GO Train station.
REMEDIATION
Faro Mine
Remediation Project
$700 MILLION
Faro Mine is a former open-pit lead-zinc mine, one of the largest of its kind in the world at approximately 25 square kilometres.
It is located in south-central Yukon on the traditional territory of
the Kaska Nations, near the town of Faro. Abandoned in 1998,
resource extraction led to 70 million tonnes of tailings and 320
million tonnes of waste rock. Care and maintenance work since
then has helped to ensure water quality so that environmental
standards are met. Active remediation is expected to begin in
2025 following the successful completion of the Yukon environmental and socio-economic assessment process, and receipt
of a water licence from the Yukon Water Board. Remediation is
expected to take about 15 years to complete, followed by ongoing
testing, maintenance operations and monitoring to make any
needed improvements to the site.

HEALTHCARE
Cape Breton Regional
Hospital Expansion
$700 MILLION
The project—a major component of the CBRM
Healthcare Redevelopment Project—a new Clinical
Services Building that will house a new, larger
emergency department, critical care department,
more inpatient beds, surgical suites, maternal/newborn services, and a new cardiac catheterization lab,
and a new Energy Centre. Site preparation began
in 2020 with foundation work last year and the first
structural steel going up in June 2022. Construction
is underway on the Energy Centre and Cape Breton
Cancer Centre.
